Firstly welcome to 2018! Wow, that feels weird to say (type). 2017 was a ‘blink and you miss it’ year for me, personally, but it turned out to be a wholly positive and fulfilling year.

I must admit I am awful at coming up with new year’s resolutions for my business, or in my personal life. So I thought I would put a request out for others to contribute theirs. Let me extend my gratitude to those that were kind enough to find the time, during the busy start of a new year, to send in their resolutions.

Way back in October 2016 I was contacted by Anthony Jewell and asked if I would like to take part in a virtual freelance conference called FREELANCERS SUMMIT. The concept intrigued me so I said Yes. Then in November 2016, I filmed a video interview with Craig Levy. The 50-minute interview covered a wide range of questions but the end result focuses on how to market yourself / your business effectively, how to drive perceived value and how to grow your client-base.

FAILURE. It’s a big scary word for all of us and something we try to avoid throughout our lives. It is even scarier for those of us who are self-employed. We battle doubters, loneliness, imposter syndrome, financial risk, the tax man and a host of others, just to make something that is ours. The fear of FAILURE is something that keeps us up at night.
BUT it is also something that shapes who we are, how we doing things and how we learn. I wanted to get a range of freelancers together to share how they have learnt from failure. How it has led to something positive in their lives. And you, as a reader, to walk away with an understanding that failure is important and not always a disaster.

In 2015 I carried out a survey to help the Digital Marketing industry better understand the needs and priorities of startup businesses. I got feedback from 55 startup owners and published the results HERE. After 2 years passed, I thought it would be interesting to re-run the same survey in 2017 to another group of 55 startups and compare the results. This is what I found.

It’s that time of year again where I force myself to sit down and ponder the last year in business. 2016 has seen my most successful year financially and the business broke the £100k revenue milestone. I must admit that as a one man business, that makes me very proud.

Last week I had the ‘pleasure’ of visiting the dentist for the first time in a few years (yes I know I should go regularly). After my experience, I got thinking about various things that resonate with my digital marketing business.

After 2.5 years based at The Assembly, a coworking space on Great Ancoats Street, I decided a change of scenery was required. I moved the digital consultancy business just down the road to Beehive Lofts, a swanky coworking space in a converted mill within the old industrial Ancoats district of Manchester.

That’s right, I said it.
Inspired by this great cynical rant about the annoyances of the startup world, I thought it was about time someone did the same for the digital marketing industry. With 9 years spent working in it and no boss to tell me off, I thought I was suited to the task.
